The Beta is ready
I have a build that I have uploaded to both the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. I am awaiting review on the iOS App Store, and will send promo codes to beta testers once the review passes. On Google Play, I had to set up a Google+ community that I will need to invite people to in order to access the beta builds on Google Play.
This is a private beta, which means I will have a limited number of testers and it will be invite-only. I am reserving some beta tester spots for anyone who happens to be reading this and is interested in helping out, especially if you have kids! Once I have links, I will post them on this blog and you will be able to request access. I don’t yet know how long it will be before I have the links — this is dependent upon the App Store review process, but I don’t expect it to be more than a couple of weeks.
I also posted a beta trailer video which I built using iMovie on OS X Mavericks. The templates made it easy, but getting the right clips into the right places took some time. I am happy with it for beta and I have received compliments from the few people I have showed.
While going through the process of getting the build prepared for submission to the app stores, I learned a lot about the process and spent a lot of time making different icon sizes and screenshots. I also learned a lot about app size limits. The app right now is at just over 80mb, which is fine on the iOS App Store, but Google Play has a limit of 50mb. I was once again saved by Corona (the SDK I am using to develop Sea Animal City) because they have implemented support for APK expansion, which just means it splits the app up into two pieces, and the expansion file is allowed to be larger than 50mb. So I got around this without too much work, but I don’t yet know what other implications that has.
The next steps are getting people signed up for the beta builds as soon as they are available on the stores and get the promo codes out to them.
As you can blog is extremely sparse at the moment, but that is something I need to improve now that I am at this stage of development, so you can safely expect more updates more frequently and sorry to have kept you waiting!
Let me know what you think of the video! What else would you like to see or know about?
